In many cultures around the world, New Year is celebrated with the arrival of the new moon. As the most important festival in China, New Year celebrations, also called Spring Festival, last 15 days, beginning with a thorough house cleaning and feast preparation, followed by paying respects to deities and ancestors, visiting family and giving presents. The celebrations culminate on the 15th day with the Lantern Festival, a tradition that dates back over 2000 years. The lanterns symbolize good fortune and a fresh start.
