What the heck is hygge, you ask? Popularized in Denmark, hygge (pronounced “hoo-gah”), is way of appreciating life’s simple pleasures. The word hygge comes from a Danish word meaning "to give courage, comfort, joy". The etymology includes an earlier Old Norse word for the soul, mind, consciousness. As the term is currently used in Denmark, a close translation to English would include coziness, wellness and togetherness.
Hygge Décor saw a rise in popularity following the 2017 release of the New York Times bestseller The Little Book of Hygge: Danish Secrets to Happy Living by Meik Wiking, founder of Copenhagen’s Happiness Research Institute.
These Nordic décor principles are open to personal interpretation, based on what might bring you contentment in relation to your own culture and personality. A few ways to add some hygge into your own home decor include:
• Minimalism and simplicity for greater peace of mind
• Neutral colour palettes enhanced by warm mood lighting (you could even try some string lighting for a touch of magic)
• Natural light from windows and skylights
• Cozy textural elements like wood finishes, plush area rugs, throw blankets and cushions
• Plants throughout the environment to bring you closer to nature
• A comfy reading nook to curl up in
• Soothing natural scents like a vanilla or cinnamon candle, for example
• Some comfy socks and soft sweatpants can help you slide in to a hygge state of mind
A more nurturing home environment can help us slow down and enjoy the simpler things in life. A little hygge could go a long way!
